Usiminas has been recognized by the Environment and Sustainable Development State Secretariat (SEMAD) with the Best Environmental Practices Award – “Less Waste, More Sustainability” edition, granted by the State System of Environment and Water Resources (Sisema). The program developed by the company “Mobiliza Todos pela Água” (All for Water) was chosen State of Minas Gerais winner as the best environmental management project in the application of industrial solid waste.
“Todos pela Água” (All for Water) is an initiative aimed at the recovery and conservation of springs, and came from a counterpart of “Mobiliza pelos Caminhos do Vale” (Mobilize through Valley Pathways) Program, in which Usiminas allocates its steel aggregate by-product to the participating municipalities for paving rural roads. By 2019, there will be 54 municipalities in the East of Minas Gerais involved in the project, more than 3,000 mapped and recovering springs, and 850,000 planted seedlings. The initiative also includes the construction of sustainable sewage treatment plants and the establishment of seedling nurseries in different locations. The objective is that the municipality itself might able to offer seedlings for the recovery of springs and agricultural areas.
For Usiminas program coordinator, Henrique Hélcio Eleto dos Santos, winning another environmental award is a recognition showing that the company is on the right track and an incentive for more actions to be developed, with the support and involvement of entities and communities. “The Mobilize All for Water Program has grown a lot since it was created in 2015, and the result improves every year, bringing more and more supporters, people and entities motivated to ensure a better and environmentally sustainable Planet for the next generations”, says Eleto.
